BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Business

Overview

This Business Programme enables students to explore and apply real life examples and situations within the context of a variety of well-known businesses, focusing on topics such as Finance, Marketing and Human Resources. Students will develop their IT, communication and team based skills through the topics.  The course incorporates different types of assessment in the form of coursework and examination.   Students will develop their business knowledge and skills in preparation for further study or employment.  

This course is taken over two years and leads to an Extended Certificate (one A Level equivalent).

Progression

Business Studies can help students aquire the necessary skills to pursue higher education courses in Accountancy, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources and Banking or apply for Apprenticeships and Sponsored Degree Programmes. A qualification in Business can help set students apart from other applicants, equip them with essential transferable skills and provide the commercial knowledge that will help prepare them for further study and future employment.

Course Content

This course covers:

  • The Business Environment
  • Personal and Business Finance
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Recruitment and Selection

During the course students will research companies in the public and private sectors such as the NHS and Waitrose, examining the external impacts on the business' stragegic objectives.

There is an examination on Personal Business Finance, externally assessed coursework involving a Marketing Plan in addition to coursework on the Business Environment and Recruitment and Selection.

Educational Experiences

Course Specific Trips, Visits & Experiences

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate Business students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of course related experiences. In the last couple of years, these have included:

  • A trip to Blacklands Farm Outdoor Activity Centre
  • A one day Marketing Challenge (SATRO) at County Hall, Kingston-on-Thames
  • Launchpad event in collaboration with Young Enterprise
  • External speakers and workshops

In addition to course specific experiences, students also have the opportunity to get involved in the College’s:

Activities Programme and Guest Speaker Programme.

Assessment

This BTEC course is assessed through a series of assignments, including some external assessments. 

The exam board for this BTEC is Pearson BTEC.

Entry Requirements

All students need to have at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (and a satisfactory school reference) in order to be accepted on an A Level/BTEC Level 3 Programme. 

In addition, students should meet the following minimum GCSE requirements:

  • Grade 4 in a numerate subject such as Maths or Science and
  • Grade 4 in a literate subject such as English Language, English Literature or History

A Merit or above in BTEC Level 2 Business will also be considered.  

 

 Students will enjoy this course and do well if they:

  • can work independently
  • like doing presentations and pitches
  • can do independent research 
  • develop an understanding of how different companies work within the UK

Students should be interested in the world of Business, enjoy working with others and able to communicate their own opinions both written and verbally.  There is a significant financial element assessed through external examination; therefore an ability to calculate and interpret financial information is essential.

How to Apply

Applications for entry September 2018

The application form for the academic year 2018-2019 is available to download here.

Students from non-partner schools must return their forms directly to Reigate College, NOT their schools. All applications will be considered according the College's Admissions Policy.

Students from partner schools (Reigate, Warwick, de Stafford and Oakwood) should return their completed Partner Schools Application Form to their school. 

The initial cut-off date for applications for entry September 2018 is 1st November 2017. A student's chances of obtaining a place are higher, the earlier the application is made. Students who apply after 1st November 2017 will be placed on a waiting list.
