My time at College was transformative in terms of my personal and academic growth. Enduring memories include study sessions with friends; engaging in lively debates in class; and taking part in activities such as netball, freshers’ celebrations, and fun activities days involving bouncy castles!

College not only provided me with a solid education, but also instilled valuable life skills such as time management; critical thinking; and teamwork. Although my time there was cut short due to the pandemic, the impact it had on my future has been profound, as it laid the foundation for my career path and helped to shape my perspective on the world.

I’m currently in the final year of my Graphic Design degree having completed a placement year in industry. But instead of working for a company, I took the decision to become self-employed and set up my own freelance graphic design business. While this was a daunting decision, I built on the knowledge I’d gained during my Business BTEC and found myself fully booked within seven months! It’s boosted my confidence hugely and created an amazing basis for my career once I finish university.

I am beyond proud to have won several awards since leaving College, including Freelance Graphic Designer of the Year (South of England 2023/24) and Graphic Designer of the Year (London & the South of England 2024/25) as part of the Prestige Awards Series. Another highlight was representing my uni on local radio as part of Global Entrepreneurs Week, where I was interviewed about setting up my business.

Looking back on my time at College as a graphic design student, I wish I had known the importance of building a diverse portfolio early on alongside my studies. Experimenting with different styles, mediums and techniques would have prepared me better for the dynamic nature of the field.

My advice to students interested in pursuing a career in graphic design is to never stop learning and to keep exploring new trends and technologies. Networking and seeking feedback from your peers and industry professionals is also invaluable, as it helps you hone your skills and find opportunities in this competitive industry.
