English Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills course

Overview

The Functional Skills English qualification is designed to give students the literacy skills to operate confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life. The course develops skills in comprehension, grammar, spelling, punctuation, writing for different purposes, discussions and presentations. Students will also build their confidence to be able to write accurately, present and discuss knowledgeably and fluently, enabling them to achieve the highest grades in their chosen subjects.

Who is it for?: Students who enrol at Reigate College with a Grade 1 or 2 in GCSE English Language will be required to follow either the Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills English course.

What goes well with this course?

Everything!

Progression

Students who successfully complete all 3 units of the level 2 Functional Skills English qualification, may progress the following academic year, to enrol on the GCSE English Language resit qualification at the College.

Course Content

Students will study three components: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

Educational Experiences

Due to the small number of students, this course is usually delivered in a very supportive, almost individual manner. Readiness to take the examination is carefully assessed by the teacher and could take place as early as the first term.

What do students say about it?

“I quite enjoyed it, it wasn’t the sort of things they forced you to do at school.”

“Give it a go – you’ve got nothing to lose. It’s broadened my horizons and given me more self-confidence. I know now that I’m as good as anybody and I can do anything I want. It’s for everybody”.

Assessment

The assessments for Reading and Writing at level 1 & 2 are externally assessed exams via the exam board EDEXCEL (http://www.edexcel.com/quals/func-skills/english/Pages/default.aspx)

The Speaking and Listening components are assessed internally by the Tutors but externally moderated. All the assessments are ‘on demand’; students will be entered when the Tutor determines they are ready and prepared for the exam. There will be several opportunities throughout the academic year for students to take the assessments until a Pass is achieved.

The exam board for this course is Pearson Edexcel.

Entry Requirements

Students will need GCSE English Language at Grade 1 or 2 in order to enrol on this course.

This course is designed to give recognition to those students whose reading ability is greater than their writing skills.
